December 3-7 2012

What a busy week! This week we started our new math unit on shapes and we are learning about quadrilaterals, vertices and all sorts of wonderful geometry terms. I look forward to getting many pictures of shape projects that we have on our agenda for the upcoming weeks!

Today your child might mention that we had a LOCKDOWN at the end of the day. For those parents that have not had a child in the Liberty County School System, periodically the schools will practice how to hide in our classrooms in case there is a possible threat on campus. I was very proud of how well my class did today since we did not have any idea that this drill was happening and many students were not familiar with our lockdown procedures. Student safety is a huge priority on our campus and I am very pleased with how well the students followed directions throughout the procedure. :)

DONATIONS NEEDED~

November 2012 Week 2

November 5-9

What an exciting week! We had great fun with our visit from the Fort Stewart Fish and Wildlife group. We learned about animals native to our area, made snakes and turtles, played animal bingo and even got to pet a real alligator, tortoise and snake. Thanks Mr. Dee, Mr. Gary and Ms. Rachael for all that you did to educate us!

UPCOMING EVENTS
Children’s Book Week
November 13-16
Don’t forget to have your child participate in our book week activities listed below. If your child is going to dress up for the book character parade, please let me know so that I can begin planning costumes for students who are not bringing a costume/book from home. Also, all students participating in the book parade MUST have a book with that character in it. After Thursday, there will be no checking out books from the media center for this event.

Events Include:
Tuesday: Crazy Socks Day
Wednesday: Crazy Hat Day
Thursday: Camouflage Day
Friday: Book Character Parade Day
(Students may bring their costumes/books to change into after lunch for the parade)

Week of September 24-28

Dear Parents,
Happy Fall!!  I hope everyone is enjoying the change in seasons and the (somewhat) cooler weather that has arrived this weekend! I just want to be in contact with you about a few things happening in our classroom and school.
I am pleased to announce that the Accelerated Reader program is up and running. This program will enable your child to take comprehension tests over the library books that they bring home from school. Because we got a late start these 9 weeks, I am setting a goal of .5 points, which is the equivalent of passing one test with a score of 100%. Attached you will find your child’s password information for Renaissance Place where you can check your child’s progress towards his/her goals. In addition, there is an AR readiness slip for you to send with your child when they are ready to take a test on their book and a space for me to note the child’s score on the test.   AR is a great part of our classroom and I am excited that we are finally able to participate.
Progress reports have been on hold because of our mid-term reports, conferences and the fact that I was out of the classroom part of this past week. They will resume this Friday, September 28th. Thank you for your patience with this.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to come conference with me about your child’s progress. If you have not come in yet, please let me know when we can meet!
This week the students will be practicing for their music program. The performance will be Friday, September 28 @ 1:00. Hope to see you there!!
Have a great week!
Mrs. Trawick

NOTES FROM THE TEACHER
It is so hard to believe that we have finished our first month of school! We have worked very hard on practicing procedures in the classroom and are now focused on the learning that is the reason your child is in school.

I am pleased with the progress that I am seeing with your students. As many of you know, kindergarten requires much more than it has in years past, which is why it is essential that your child comes to school focused and ready to learn. Thank you for all you do to help with this.

This month I will contact you to have our first Parent-Teacher Conference. Please make every effort to attend this. It is important even this early in the year to make sure that you are aware of how your child is doing academically and socially so that he/she can be successful in my room. I will send home available times for these conferences so that you can schedule a time that is convenient for you.

If you need to contact me, feel free to send a note in your child’s binder, email me strawick@liberty.k12.ga.us or call me during planning (10:30-11:15) or afterschool @912-368-3114.
Happy September!
Mrs. Trawick

Busy Week Ahead

I hope that everyone is having a great week! Joseph Martin has quite a few events coming up, so I wanted to post reminders about everything for you.
  • Cookie Dough Fundraiser: Money was due Friday, August 24. Thank you to those who turned in your envelopes. If you did not and have orders, they will be accepted Monday August 27.
  • Book Fair Week: Our school wide book fair begins Monday, August 27th. We will visit Monday for your child to make a wish list. If you would like your child to purchase anything, please send the money in a marked envelope and I will send him/her up during the day to get the items.
  • Back to School Night: Tuesday, August 28, you are invited to visit the school. Areas will be set up with more information about some of our programs, like the I CARE program and computer checkout. Please come and see what your students have been working on since the beginning of the year!
  • Scholastic Book Orders: I sent home Scholastic Order Forms last week. If you would like to order anything using those forms, the deadline is August 28th. I apologize for this being the same week ans the school book fair, so if you do not order, it is completely understandable. I will send these forms home monthly so you will have more opportunities later in the year.
  • Muffins with Mom: Friday, August 31, all mothers/grandmothers are invited to have breakfast with their students. This fun filled event begins at 7:20 and ends at 7:40. This is always a great event for the students to get to have their family eat with them. I hope to see you there!
  • AR/Library Visit: Our first visit to the library was this week and the students had a great time choosing their books to check out. We go to the library every Thursday, so that is when we will return the books. The AR program that I mentioned in a previous post has not begun yet so there are no goals set for your child nor are there any tests for them on the books. I will let you know when that changes!
  • Popcorn: Popcorn sales have begun! Every Friday your child may purchase popcorn for $.50 a bag. Please send money marked POPCORN so that I can know to add their name to the list.
On top of all of this, there is still learning occurring in the classroom :) Upcoming topics include the following:

  • Letter Hh
  • Sight Words I, like, it
  • Comparing Numbers using less than and equal to
  • All About Me
  • Labor Day Holiday
  • Living/NonLiving
I hope that everyone has a great weekend!! Feel free to contact me via email strawick@liberty.k12.ga.us if you need anything.

                                             LIBRARY VISITS BEGIN THIS WEEK!

This week our class will begin visiting the Media Center. Our scheduled time is every Thursday from 1:30-2:00.

Your child will be allowed to check out one book at a time. Once the Accelerated Reader program is up and running, they will be able to take a test on the book and then check out a new one.

I set a goal of 2 AR tests per 9 weeks for my students at this point in the year due to the fact that not all of them can read independently and rely upon an adult to help them with their test.   Students who meet this goal with an    average of 85% will get to attend an AR reward party. Those are always fun events and I encourage you to help your child read their books thoroughly so that they can be a part of the fun!

If your child loses/damages their book, they will have to pay to replace the book and be restricted from  checking out another book until that fine is paid.
It is said that not all readers are leaders but all leaders are readers. Remember that the act of reading with your child lays a foundation that helps them the rest of their life!

                                    THIS WEEK'S TOPICS

Letter Gg and its sounds
Sight Words a, my, the
Writing name in correct case
Writing/dictating to tell a story

WEEK 1- AUGUST 6 thru AUGUST 10

 YIPPEEE!

We made it through the first 5 days of school!  It is such an adjustment for Kindergarten students--getting used to a new school, a new or first teacher, a long day with no naps. I am so proud of how all the students did with learning my expectations in the classroom, the principal's expectations in the school and meeting so many new people in just 5 days. In the midst of that, we still managed to learn about rules, letters, numbers and living/nonliving things. As the weeks proceed, check back to see more pictures of what we are doing!

Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! I am very excited to have your child in my class. It was great seeing so many parents at the open house (even with the tornado warning :) ) and I look forward to beginning our school year Monday. See you then!
